Blackberry kept saying password incorrect - stuck at attempt 6/10 - corrupted?
For my husband's Q5 that he just got this month.
He said the device kept telling him the password was wrong even though he was positive it was correct. It said he had 10 attempts to enter it and if still incorrect, all the data would be wiped...however, it just stuck at attempt 6 of 10 no matter how many tries he entered.
It did say for emergencies, enter 'blackberry'. I entered 'blackberry' and it took us to another screen where he could enter his password - turns out that he was entering the correct password all along. After entering blackberry and then his password, the phone was fine. For now, he has removed the password setting as he is afraid this will happen again.
I've seen a few reports of this online, but no info on what happened in the long run.
Is the phone likely becoming corrupted?

I worked for blackberry for 6 years and i have never seen a password corruption issue. I have seen many instances of user error when entering password. entering "blackberry for emergencies" is not for emergencies. You must enter blackberry to continue which is why i assume it was stuck on attempt 6/10. You would have had to enter blackberry for it to continue. I would chalk this one up to user error.

It will never happen unless you or your partner change the password. Or wants a new blackberry passport.

You also enter 'blackberry' to check if caps lock, alt, number, or symbol key is enabled. That way you know you are entering your password correctly.

Is it possible someone mis typed the password? Sometimes I get to 4 wrong guesses easily of I'm not paying attention

Great - thanks everyone. Glad to hear that it isn't likely corrupt. I know he was hitting the right keys and the same keys worked after typing blackberry, but it must have been an issue with caps lock or something like that.
He has now put a password back on the phone as it appears it must have been 'user error' rather than any corruption problem.
Thanks again.

Plug it in to the computer to unlock next time
At least you can check and make sure your caps is on, on the keyboard of your computer

It's probably his keyboard double-typing letters. Mine does it all the time (on my Q10). If you google the problem, you'll notice that it's prevalent. It's such a sorry device.

When I have typed the wrong password it obviously tells me so. What I have noticed (it seemed) was that it would continue to count those in correct passwords. Example
Wrong password 1/10 attempts left. Then I get it right the second attempt.
Next week or whenever I make an error it would say 2/10 attempts left. Correctly type in the password, and so on.
Over a long period of time, the number of attempts left would shrink. I got worried it would wipe my phone so I disabled the password. It should have started the counter back at 1 instead of adding them.
It was a BB10 phone, but I don't remember what OS version it was. It maybe corrected by now since there has been several updates. Also this was with picture password btw (still a pretty cool feature!!).

OMG-
I plugged my phone into my computer and it kept trying to read my phone. DO NOT DO THIS. Charge
your phone into something other than your computer!!!
I read the note from 2008 and am using my blackberry 10 bold - it locked up on me too after 5/10 attempts to use
my regular password!!! I followed the instruction below- I entered the word blackberry no caps, no quotes, and
it took me to another screen and I put in my password and my phone was unlocked.
scared the crap out of me as I can't back up my phone for some reason and don't want to lose my emails or contacts.
This worked perfectly for me!!! Thanks to the person with the answer.

Hello, I'm experiencing the exact same issue with my passport. It's stuck on at attempt 6 of 10 no matter how many tries he entered. I know I'm entering the correct password because I have it written down for safekeeping and I'm showing on the device the exact password being entered. Worse, I tried entering 'blackberry', it doesn't take me to any other screen.
Strange things are happening. I was just helping my Aunt the other day who had the same problem with her Iphone.
Any help would be appreciated.

Sign online to your Blackberry Protect account. Choose the option to lock your Blackberry and Create a new password.
In a few moments you will be able to unlock your Blackberry with the new password.

This is an old thread. But I have a comment
The Q5 and the Q10 has a problem with the keyboard. After extended use, you would get double characters when you hit the keys once.
Next time you enter the password, count the asterisks to make sure it matches the length of your password.
